Shrub Steppe - Eastern Washington State

Willow goldfinch

Eastern Washington

The willow goldfinch is the official Washington State bird. In 1951, legislators called on school children to choose the Washington state bird by voting between the goldfinch and the songbird, meadowlark-- goldfinch won for its beauty, because this bird is more widespread across the entire state, and because the meadowlark was already the official state bird of seven other states.
